GS 2102: Introduction to Gender Studies

This class introduces students to cultural, political and historical issues that shape gender. Through a variety of disciplinary perspectives in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, the course familiarizes students with diverse female and male experiences and gendered power relationships. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the overlying focus will be on the human element in these works in order to promote a respect for the diversity of those elements.  I want you to be aware that we will be discussing controversial issues including but not limited to, women’s reproductive choices [abortion rights], transgender, and homosexuality, although no specific opinions or agenda will be promoted regarding these issues.

We will cover a wide range of content as this is a survey course in the field, such as the women’s movement and feminism, racism and heterosexism, masculinity, sexuality, eating disorders and what constitutes beauty, health and reproductive rights, the family and housework, prostitution, pornography, hip hop, poetry, TV, film, advertising, violence against women including sexual assault, politics, religion, solutions, activism, change, and the future.  As individuals learn in a number of different ways, we will study these issues using a variety of different methods, including reading in the textbook and online, viewing video and websites, academic discussion, active learning activities, writing and research, an action project, and exams.  This core class is required for all Gender Studies Certificate and minor earners.
